Junior Jam: Junk Percussion & Samba

Event description

Junior Jam gives children the chance to develop musical skills in a fun, friendly and accessible way. Sessions last 50 minutes and take place once a month at Band on the Wall, with musical games and activities, including time to experiment, play with instruments and socialise.

Junior Jam is led by Kabantu (previously Project Jam Sandwich), a world-folk-fusion quintet of award-winning musicians known for concocting captivating, exhilarating improvisations, infectious rhythms and beautiful melodies from around the globe.

Make your own percussion instruments out of household recyclable material*. Musicians Delia and Ben will teach you how to find interesting sounds on your instrument and how to combine these in an ensemble. Looking at the structure of how samba music is put together, we’ll learn samba ‘calls’ and how to respond to rhythms in a group.

*Participants should bring one or two small items they could use as a basis for an instrument, such as a juice carton, empty jar or milk bottle.
