LEYMN Annual Conference 2016: Raising the Baton

Event description

Our community is united through a belief in the power of music but the opportunity to discuss the repertoire we use and how it can impact on children is rare.

We shall explore how music is used in early years activities, environments and experiences.

  • Are we making best use of the resources available?
  • Should we take more risks with our musical choices?
  • What can we learn from other art-forms?
  • Is the music we use the best it can be?
  • Where do you begin when composing for young children?
  • How do we celebrate the diversity of audiences through music?

This one-day conference is held in the beautiful Royal Albert Hall and will provide a rich day of presentations, case studies, discussions and practical sessions. By coming together we will celebrate good practice and identify where more work is needed and what our network can achieve together. This is why this conference has a timetable with everyone in mind; from practitioners to project deliverers, cultural organisations to classroom teachers, composers to setting managers.

Delegates will feel inspired to embed music into the heart of their practice to enable every child to have a musical childhood.

Keynote: Max Reinhardt (Musical Director / Composer for Oily Cart Theatre and BBC Radio 4 presenter) will share how theatre for babies can engage and inspire all senses.

Case Study: Katherine Morley and Liz Muge, creators of 16 Singers and Hubbub respectively, will share the thinking that started their musical performance journeys and how the findings are leading them in exciting new directions.

Case Study: Nicola Burke will share her findings from a year-long research project into the use of recorded music in early childhood settings and will offer practical ideas for exploring music listening activities.

Practical: David and Ruby from BabyJazz will fuse the popular musical styles of jazz and beat-box in a fun and informative practical session.

Speed Discussion Session – ‘LEYMN Consultation’: Delegates will work in small groups to respond to a number of provocative but relevant questions.

Practical: John Webb will lead an exploration into musical moments for children, and will creatively examine how to capture them through improvisation and composition, culminating in a final grand musical moment created by the delegates.

We are also pleased to offer a range of free extra sessions you select on your order form:
