Vinyl Weekender: Call Out

Event description

Thurs 20 – Sat 22 Apr |10am – 5pm | Band on the Wall | Free | Apply

An introduction to the art of cutting vinyl: Part geeky, part playful, this course offers a real eye-opener to the craft of vinyl cutting and the creative opportunities that arise from working within this unique medium.

Get hands-on experience in the creation of lathe-cut records under the guidance of Birds Hit Records’ cutting engineer. Learn about the process of pressing and mastering, and touch on the science of disc recording. Explore experimental cuts and the use of alternative materials and learn about the physical limits of the process. Cut your own record using a custom built, fully manual lathe, to take home on the final day – Record Store Day.

DJ, producer and illustrator Mr. Scruff will select all participants, and will be on hand throughout the weekend. Vinyl from the course will end up in his record box, to be played at his ‘Keep it Unreal’ night at Band on the Wall on Saturday 6 May. All participants will receive guest tickets to Keep It Unreal to hear some of the Vinyl Weekender records played.

“Seen by many as a ‘dark art’, this project is a great opportunity for artists to get a better understanding of the creation of a vinyl record. Calling all DIY vinyl lathe freaks, electronic tinkerers, musicians, studio engineers, producers, DJs, record label owners, sound system operators, turntablists, experimental sound artists & anyone else who feels a connection to the vinyl format!” – Mr. Scruff
