We All Make Music

Event description

An inspiring, inclusive music education festival

Join us for an innovative, ingenious day of exploration.

Get hands-on with new musical instruments and technology, discover new approaches to inclusive music delivery, hear from disabled and non-disabled music leaders working in the sector and network with people from across the country.

Disabled people are currently under represented in the music education workforce. This lack of representation has an impact on the way we educate disabled and non-disabled young musicians… On our and their aspirations, opportunities, progression…

There’s a huge amount of thought and discussion taking place right now around how to make music education more inclusive; how to share the joy of creative, expressive music-making with as wide a group of young people as possible.

We All Make Music addresses these discussions through a hands-on, creative approach.

The Programme

Inclusion matters! The leadership and workforce of the arts and cultural sector should reflect the diversity of the society we live in. That is possible. The movement for a diverse workforce is already starting to happen. Join in: together we can make it a reality and make a genuine difference to the musical lives and journeys of young people.

This event is part of Drake Music's Think2020 programme to strengthen inclusion in music education, supported by Youth Music.

The day will include:

Hands-on sessions led by disabled & non-disabled musicians looking at Garage Band & ThumbJam, Sampling & Composition and TouchBoards, Makey Makeys & Mogees.

Plus discussions and debates such as:

•   Benefits of restrictions - How can collaborations between music and technology inspire new ideas for education/participatory settings? •   R&D in the Classroom – Learning simple ways to use tech in the classroom. •   Accredited Music Courses - What challenges face inclusive music educators when it comes to accreditation? •   Challenging Traditional Peri Lessons - Exploring what is possible within one to one teaching if we look beyond the traditional approach and instruments. •   Questions You Were Always Afraid to Ask - An open session that will allow the content of discussion to be decided byYOU! Ask questions and receive an honest and non-judgmental answer.

And practical sessions on the Social Model, turning thought into action and more

Sessions will be delivered by disabled and non-disabled Drake Music associates, with opportunities for you to ask questions, share and participate throughout. More info about the programme can be found here.

Music Hubs

Are you under pressure to do more around accessibility in your organisation's work & practice? Are you aware of the skills and aspirations gap created by the under-representation of disabled people in the music education workforce? Are you striving for excellence?

We All Make Music will feed directly into child-centred delivery of your core and extension roles for all children and young people. Hands-on interactive sessions will help you to discover new accessible approaches to:

  • learning an instrument
  • WCET
  • inclusive ensembles

Real-life examples will be used to challenge and change perceptions and knowledge of what inclusion is and what it could be. The whole day will focus on having and delivering high aspirations with and for disabled people, bringing you new ideas around:

  • progression routes
  • CPD for school staff
  • recruiting and retaining disabled staff
  • supporting schools to deliver music in the curriculum
  • authentic musical experiences which generate ownership & belonging
