Kate Lowes, our Head of Programmes, blogs about the next phase of our Both Sides Now programme – a three-year initiative to support, inspire and showcase women in music across the North of England – and we want to hear from you.

Community music and music education were at the centre of the conversation at the TEDx event in Lincoln late last year, as soundLINCS’ CEO Nikki-Kate Heyes MBE gave a fantastic speech on the topic “Community Music: A Power for Change”.

Conductors for Change gives music leaders the tools, strategies and practical conducting techniques to set up a new instrumental ensemble, or develop an existing one. Created by a team of highly experienced music directors and educators this flexible programme of hands-on training days is rooted in inclusive practice.

Do you know a dedicated and committed young musician aged 11-18? We're now accepting nominations for the 2018-2019 National Orchestra for All, a unique non-auditioned, free to participate, national youth orchestra.

K-Dog has been working with producer Lindsay Corstorphine in his Studio Sessions at Heart n Soul's SoundLab. He is creating an album and in each 2 hour session is able to make a complete track.

As part of Daisi's Soundwaves in Action project, we have been working with a group of Children in Care who attend RIO Youth Club in Exeter. 

FAB! is an annual action-packed day for Looked After Children in Lincolnshire ran by soundLINCS, as part of our FundC Fusion programme. 

For the past five years it has combined a presentation ceremony for children and young people from all over Lincolnshire with a huge diversity of music and arts activities based around a chosen theme. There was also a long service Award Ceremony for Foster Carers as well as a Foster Carers Conference giving them the opportunity to learn and liaise with other carers.

A video showing the personal and musical impact of the Open School Orchestra (OSO) project at Pencalenick Special School. Alongside music from the students, an interview with headteacher, Helen Campbell, shows how a group of students with special needs and autism with significant communication issues came together and found their voices through music, both individually and collectively. This film charts their journey over the 9-month project, and shows some of the music they produced.

At the end of our first year of Open School Orchestras (OSO) in Cornwall, we've been thinking about next steps, and how to create progression routes for young SEN/D musicians. We created a short pilot project to explore the idea of inviting mainstream musicians to join the OSO in creative music workshops - integration following on from inclusion work. The short films below show the final performance, and discussion around how to build on the pilot, creating pathways through creative ensembles for those wanting to take their music further, beyond the classroom.
