Composer of Educational Music for Ukulele

Job description

Mosaic Music Education strives to assist expertly-delivered, fun and illuminating instrumental teaching across the UK.  Through our online interactive resource for whole class instrumental teaching and our professional development and training, Mosaic aims to enable teachers to deliver outstanding instrumental lessons even if they lack experience, and to engage children in inspiring music making from their very first note.

Founded in December 2014 with the aid of a Deutsche Bank Award for Creative Enterprise, in 2016 Mosaic won the Amati Guildhall Creative Entrepreneur’s Award and was runner up in the Guildhall School of Music and Drama Creative Entrepreneur’s Awards.  After a successful pilot scheme of our woodwind and brass resources, Mosaic is now seeking to expand its range of resources to include ukulele.

We are seeking to commission a composer and educator with experience of teaching ukulele in a whole class setting, to work with us in the development of our new resources.  The successful applicant will be responsible for writing both the music for our resources and short Teacher’s Guides to accompany them.  They will also work with us on development of the ukulele curriculum, and contribute to the instrumental teaching section of our weekly lesson plans.

Initially we require 6 pieces of between 1 and 3 minutes in length, which will form the material for the first 12 lessons of our beginner ukulele curriculum.  Each piece will be in a different genre from a list provided by Mosaic, and will gradually progress at an appropriate rate for whole class instrumental lessons.  Some works will include vocal parts and improvisation sections.  Teacher’s Guides will cover how to teach new areas of technique broached in the pieces, as well as the pieces themselves.  The finished pieces should be provided as fully mixed .wav files, with accompanying scores and parts in Sibelius.  However, vocal parts can be added later if necessary.

Fee:

The fee is £1000.  Should the initial commission be successful, we would seek to commission a second and third term of resources from the same composer.

Person Specification:

Our ideal candidate will have:

  • Experience of composing educational music, and producing high quality backing tracks.
  • Experience of teaching ukulele in a whole class setting.
  • A strong grasp of ukulele technique.
  • A passion for music education.
  • Experience in writing music of different genres.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • The ability to work to agreed deadlines.
