Rock Upon Tyne Art Day

Art Day with Theresa Poulton

Summer holidays are here!

To kick off our holiday activities, we spent the day working with a professional artist. Theresa Poulton works in the Newbridge Studios in Newcastle. Theresa works with collage and paint creating abstract art. We had a tour of the studios that house around 70 working artists in a wide range of disciplines.

We started off on our art journey with pencil and white paper, drawing our life models. No rubbing out allowed!

Next, we worked with charcoal and practiced blending with our fingers. We got quite dirty so it's a good job we didn't wear our best clothes!

For lunch we ran over the road in the rain to the Tyneside Cinema cafe and had burgers, hot dogs or nachos washed down with coke or OJ. With full tummies we headed back to the studios in sunshine to continue our work.

In the afternoon, Theresa had us drawing from life models again, except this time we had markers attached to the end of garden canes and we were all drawing on one long sheet of lining paper taped to the floor! It was a bit like fishing and really quite tricky. With a couple of place changes, a bit of doodling, straight edge shapes and colouring in we had a finished piece of art that would give Picasso's 'Guernica' a run for its money!

All in all we had an excellent day, learned loads of new things about art and artists and found the artists in ourselves. We can't wait to put on our exhibition next year!
