The Sound of Music

Rock Upon Tyne and their families enjoy a night at the Theatre Royal, Newcastle.

Well, there was no need for us to 'Climb Every Mountain', we didn't even have to climb the stairs! Sitting in the stalls at the beautiful Theatre Royal, Newcastle, (http://www.theatreroyal.co.uk/) we had a perfect view of the stage.

The cast were led by Danielle Hope and Steven Houghton as Maria and Captain Von Trapp, both luminaries in theatre and television. This was the first time that some of the group had seen the story so they were over the moon when their guesses of a romance blossoming between Maria and the Captain were correct!

Our stand out performance, however, was from Jan Hartley who played the Mother Abbess. Her voice literally had the hairs on the backs of our necks standing out, she was so powerful!

I think our 'Favourite Things' were the Von Trapp children, Liesl, Friedrich, Louisa, Brigitta, Marta, Gretl ... and Kurt! God bless Kurt! And I think we were all dreaming of being 'Sixteen going on Seventeen' when Liesl and Franz performed a lovely dance with the song.

The Sound of Music is one of the greatest musicals of all time and is based on the true story of Baroness Maria Von Trapp. The songs, written by Rodgers and Hammerstein are classics and, although the younger of the group may not have known the words as well as their adults, the songs were definitely familiar! Can you even believe that this is the 50th Anniversary of the classic Movie?!

Well, it seems that there is no 'So Long, Farewell' from this classic production that continues to enthral, but for now, from us, it's adieu, adieu to you and you and you.
