Soundwaves case studies

In 2012, Daisi, the arts education partnership organisation for Devon and Torbay, was awarded a ‘Musical Inclusion’ grant by Youth Music, the national music education charity. Daisi is now one of 26 national strategic partners of Youth Music, and is delivering the Soundwaves project across Devon and Torbay, which focuses on musical opportunities for young people in challenging circumstances.

Key partners include Wolf + Water, the University of Exeter, Torbay Music Service and Devon Music Service.

Children and young people can experience challenges in their lives through their immediate social, economic or geographic environment, physical or learning disabilities or other factors. Music is a vital ingredient in bringing about personal and social change for these children.

Daisi’s role is to bring together and support people, places and organisations who want to bring the transformative power of music to those most in need.

Soundwaves works with local musicians and music organisations and includes three main strands of activity:

  • Networking and continuing professional development opportunities - supporting and strengthening workforce practice through training and strengthening links between musicians, youth workers, those involved with music organisations, and those who work in any way with children in challenging circumstances. Working with local partner organisations to research and evaluate locally effective ways of working with children in challenging circumstances.
  • Strategic working - with Music Education Hubs in Devon and Torbay, as well as the wider music and youth sectors to systematically increase the quality, quantity and accessibility of progressive music opportunities for children in challenging circumstances.
  • Cold spot activity—working with a range of partners to respond to the needs of children and young people through music-making activities in areas where opportunities are currently limited
