http://katemb.com/ttbb/ is my resource website which supports all of my early years music making projects. You'll find out much more about me and my work here, as well as videos, testimonials and songs to download.
I have been working in the early years using music since 2002. I believe all young children have the right to make music, sing, dance and move freely in the ways they need to, and that this should be celebrated by those who work with and care for them every day.
I work in Children's Centres on longer term projects which embed effective approaches to music-making and movement into daily practice. The emphasis is always on communication and well-being, as well as enjoyment of music-making for its own sake.
Singing is at the heart of all of my work. I am trained in Makaton and use this throughout my work as it is an excellent communication tool for younger children not yet talking. I use music and movement together as much as possible, and am inspired by Jabadao's developmental movement play approaches. I play the flute and percussion and incorporate live music into all of my projects. I play a very small amount of ukulele, and am fascinated by how well very young children play this instrument and how they respond to it. It often enables very free child-led singing to happen more easily when I don't know the children very well.
I work with families in all of my early years projects.
I am proud of my resource website http://katemb.com/ttbb/. I set this up so that so that the families and practitioners I work with can use the songs and approaches I introduce more easily, without the need to remember songs, words or theories, or write things down. I am passionate about leaving a legacy and supporting the process of long term improvement in music-making and movement play in the wider early years sector. The use of video has proved an excellent tool to share and celebrate my project work with the wider family who might not be able to get to our sessions and see their children's reponses first hand.
I am currently working on The Terrific Twos at Riverside early years music project in North Shields, North Tyneside (April - December 2014). We are currently enjoying exploring one to one approaches with two year old children using ukuleles which has been fascinating.
I have been successful in three out of three applications which I have submitted to Youth Music and am massively proud of this!
I am the director of Maines-Beasley Creative Industries Ltd.
