MID runs participatory music activities with immigration detainees and excluded groups living nearby.  They share thoughts and emotions, learn musical skills and create arresting music of raw power.  They make their voices heard and learn from each other’s life experience.  This work builds resilience, confidence, and informed attitudes about immigration.

MID has been taking music-making into immigration detention centres since 2005, and out again into the community since 2007.  Immigration detention is a highly stigmatising experience, steeped in insecurity and causing high levels of depression, anxiety and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder.  We are the only organisation in the UK focused on arts provision for detainees, and provide vital psychological support to this exceptionally marginalised group.  We have pioneered the use of music-making to connect detainees to excluded and stigmatised groups in the community, enabling them to create and exchange music and lyrics with each other and build empathy and solidarity.  We meet their urgent need for self-expression, bring them the joy of creativity and help them to find how much they have in common.
