We'll work with Year 6 pupils on a project that supports them to make the transition from primary to secondary school by participating in a creative participatory music-making programme and developing links with a group of young music and creative mentors from catchment secondary schools. Our project will be designed in consultation with our pupils, pupils from the secondary schools working alongside professional music tutors and partners including Bradford Music Education Hub and Making Your Mind Up (mymup) - a specialist support service tackling mental health issues amongst children and young people. Themes such as isolation, cultural diversity, confidence, bullying, hate crime and resilience will be explored in 36 out of school hours music making sessions leading to celebratory performances at CVP and the partner secondary schools where certificates of achievement will be given out to all pupils who have successfully taken part. CVP pupils will be offered the opportunity to gain Arts Award Explore accreditation. We will create a Moving On Up Learners Pack to be used in the school in subsequent years and to share more widely in the Bradford Education and arts and creative sectors and beyond.

Mind the Gap (MTG) is the UK’s largest theatre company that creates work with and for people with learning disabilities (LD), and our multi-artform programme aims to challenge negative perceptions. Each year, MTG Academy provides regular training in theatre, music and dance for 50 learning-disabled people, and reaches 500 people p/a through practical workshops in outreach settings. Training offers progression routes from entry-level to supported employment.    Thanks to Youth Music Foundation investment MTG will deliver a three stranded programme of skills development over 32 months, with pathways ranging from entry-level sessions to peer mentoring and artistic development. Each strand of activity will provide skills development and performance opportunities.   Strand 1, Outreach: entry-level music workshops for young people aged 11+ through collaborations with venue and community partners in Bradford, Leeds, Halifax and Wakefield.    Strand 2, MTG Academy: music programme providing Arts Award accredited training with modules at foundation, intermediate, advanced and vocational levels.   Strand 3, Workforce: developing the leadership skills of learning-disabled Artists. They will become peer mentors and facilitators in our core delivery team and develop new skills to support their own artistic development.   Contact Charli Ward, Academy Director to find out more and get involved.
