New! Trinity Certificate for Music Educators: Early Childhood

MERYC-England in partnership with CREC are pleased to announce a NEW bespoke early childhood version of the Trinity College Certificate for Music Educators.

NEW!  Level 4.  Certificate for Music Educators: Early Childhood

“The CREC CME has the potential to be an excellent programme which has a significant and distinctive impact on Early Years music education and practice. The course director is one of the leading names in early years’ music education, with an international reputation, and she and her team have a wealth of knowledge and experience in this area. The course team have a very clear vision for the course. A strong ethos and philosophy of what is good practice in early years’ education and how practitioners’ professional development is best supported underpins all aspects of it.” (Trinity College feedback)

MERYC-England (http://www.meryc.co.uk/) in partnership with CREC (Centre for Research in Early Childhood) have successfully validated a bespoke early childhood version of the Trinity College Certificate for Music Educators.  The CME:EC is a flexible, part-time, distance course offered across the whole of England.  Each applicant will have their own regional mentor who tailors the course exactly to their level of experience, their situation and their needs.  The only fixed part of the course is 4 core input days in Birmingham during the Spring term (probably Saturdays once a month – dates still to be fixed.)  The core input days will be given by a quality team of early childhood music specialists with considerable experience and will be a chance for all students to meet and share.

Who is it for?  Anyone and everyone who wishes to become a better early childhood music educator and wishes to have a nationally recognised qualification.  If students already have experience and expertise, then they may be able ‘tick off’ some of the learning outcomes without needing to repeat them – equally, if students are starting from scratch and want to learn to become early childhood music educators, then they may be able to negotiate extra ‘on the job’ mentoring at an extra cost.

Applicants will either need to have a practical situation already established – or – if not currently working, will discuss with the mentor how a training practice can be set up.

How are students assessed?  Each student assembles a portfolio of evidence that demonstrates their knowledge and skills in all the learning outcomes that are specified by the CME.  These are nationally accredited learning outcomes that all Trinity College CME students must achieve – so the course has weight and legitimacy.  There are 5 small tasks that are integrated into practical work with children e.g. observations of music play, plan and teach 5 sessions and so on.  The mentors guide students in assembling the evidence at their own pace and with as much support as they need.

Are there any entry requirements?  We ask for a minimum requirement of GCSE English (or an equivalent) and that applicants can sing a children’s song in tune and communicate in spoken English sufficiently well to work with a group of children and to participate in mentoring and training days.  There will be a small interview process with the mentors and a chance to discuss the course in more detail before applicants commit.

How much does the course cost?  Students are asked to pay £250.00 when they register and then can pay the remaining £1,250 in instalments for a maximum of 2 years.  For this fee they receive individual support from a mentor, 4 high quality training days and a recognised, national qualification.

How to apply? The course is rolling enrolment – meaning applicants can apply, interview and register at any time.  There is a final completion date at the end of the Summer term however.  Some students may be able to whizz through in less than a year if they are highly experienced – others may have many commitments and prefer to take it slowly over the maximum of 2 years.  We expect most students to complete in a typical academic year.  After completing the online application, students are referred to the regional mentor who gets in touch for the interview and then sets out a personal action plan, taking any prior experience and knowledge into account.
