Trainer profile: an interview with Dr. Jenevora Williams

We are very pleased to welcome Dr. Jenevora Williams to lead our Vocal Health Workshop on Wednesday 9 November 2016.

In the lead up to this training we spoke to Dr. Williams about how the voice works when it’s healthy, what could go wrong, and how this workshop will be of great value to anybody who uses their voice for work: whether you are an actor or singer, teacher or music animateur.

Before the course takes place here is a chance to find out more about Dr. Williams’ musical interests and her past and present work, as well as further details about what to expect at the upcoming workshop…

What are your main musical interests and what aspects of music are you passionate about?

“I am passionate about teaching and learning. I spend my time teaching singing to professional singers and teaching teachers how to teach singing. My approach is always to look at the issue from a fundamental perspective: physiological, functional or mechanical. Then I work out what the singer is doing and how they could do it more easily. It’s all about making it easier and more enjoyable for the performer.”

Which organisations and artists have you worked with, collaborated with, or been most inspired by?

“I’ve worked as a performer with major companies such as Welsh National Opera and labels such as Decca and Hyperion. I’ve also performed in community venues all over Europe; from prisons to day centres, residential homes to rural libraries. As a teacher I’ve worked with the National Youth Choirs (for twenty years) and all the major Cathedral Foundations. I’ve worked in a huge variety of schools, colleges and universities. I’m as inspired by the person working with a small group of kids as I am by the massive corporate giants. It’s all about the potential of individuals.”

Could you let us know about any training or research on Vocal Health and singing that you have been busy with over the past year or so?

“I’m training postgraduate teachers in a PGCert in Vocal Pedagogy, and also teach certificates in Advanced Vocal Anatomy as well as Teaching Singing to Young Voices. In addition to this, I train doctors and physiotherapists on a postgraduate course in Performing Arts Medicine.”

What can attendees expect to take away from the ‘Vocal Health’ course?

“A greater understanding of how the voice works when it’s healthy. Tips and techniques for voice use to maintain the healthy state, how to recognise when it’s not so good and what to do about it. Lots of do’s and don’ts regarding treatments and a detailed handout with it all in.”

Where are we most likely to find you?

“It’s all on my website: www.jenevorawilliams.com – there are lots of free resources to download.”
