Does Music make a difference to NEET young people?
For NEET young people there are often many barriers to learning and developing, and they are often told that they will never achieve anything in life.  Using music as a tool for our groups helped raise their confidence and motivation and has provided them an opportunity to achieve accreditation.
On Trax funded through Youth Music provided young people with the time, space guidance and venue to practice skills of writing and recording their own styles of music in their own time and at their own pace, using their personal stories and inner most thoughts to produce lyrics.
The project offered a unique opportunity to work alongside professional music producers who shared their skills, knowledge and expertise and stories, and created a platform for young people to develop knowledge about the music industry.
“I didn’t know there were so many jobs available, my writing skills are not that great, but my IT skills are spot on, and I feel I could do something more technical even if it’s behind the scenes, I might look at doing a course at college to help me for my future” (young person’s comment)

It has been a gargantuan year for culture in the north, with Hull UK City of Culture 2017 continuing to flow through everything, and as part of the Music4U programme, the National Centre for Early Music worked with Hull City Council's Creative Voice programme, to develop an impressive multi-cultural performance event, in celebration of the 10th birthday of the COOLture Young People's Cultural Arts Festival.

This is our new rap-metal track, Going Off On One! We ran a Youth-Music funded workshop for young people who have learning disabilities on April 19th 2017, and this is the film created from the day. Participants had fun learning the Deftones inspired guitar riffs, playing the drum in military style, rehearsing screamo, discussing what made them angry, working on their own lyrics and flow - and of course as you will see from the video there was lots and lots of dancing!

How is Community Radio in Bradford helping to broaden young people's musical tastes, develop communication skills and raise aspirations.

The Colours of Music Film was created by young people with My Pockets and played as a back drop as the orchestra performed.  The vocals were rocorded live and added after the event.

The fillm has since been shown at Cycle Cinema, the International Community Arts Festival in Rotterdam which took place 29 March to 2 April 2017.
