To use music as a means to engage young people from East Durham, in order to develop their musical, personal and social skills; and aspirations. To lay the foundations for sustained opportunities for engagement through music.
Our intention is to deliver a pilot project as part of our East Durham Creates programme; providing high quality music making opportunities in percussion with young people aged between 11-16 years old in East Durham. Weekly workshops will focus on using everyday objects to create an ensemble - ensuring participants aren’t restricted by social factors such as lack of family income, which often prevent participation. We are working in partnership with Sage Gateshead, community venues and a local emerging practitioner to deliver these much needed accessible routes to informal music. In addition, to ensure progression routes and links with formal music making we will work with Durham and Darlington Music Hub plus East Durham College. We will support young people to work as part of a team and develop their musical skills, instilling a sense of ownership and developing their confidence, self esteem and wider aspirations. Bespoke opportunities for these groups to perform will be created, as will an exciting opportunity to experience a master class and performance from visiting Brooklyn- based artists So Percussion.
