You are here:

Are you a Barrier to Funding?

The recent changes in the music education landscape are nothing new. So what are you going to do about it?

I like to wear different hats, jump from one freelance portfolio platform to another, dodging and weaving a career that even now after 25 years, still embraces traces of live performance, education and project management.

You could say I’m a master of many areas. You could say I’ve not really mastered any.

Whatever. I’m not one who makes a habit of pointing a finger, though I have learned that not sticking around too long in one place makes you a more difficult target for those who do.

Now I can’t help thinking this current change of cultural funding landscape is one that will catch even the weaver-flies amongst us. It’s all a bit serious isn’t it, a lot of mighty good people with impressive meeting planners will wobble and fall, freelancers will find a whole new level of desperation, and young people in need will become even more isolated. That’s a fact, there’s no spin required, some truly great people doing valuable work will be decapitated.

Have no fear though. Triangles will be cut, cappuccinos will splutter, key notes will bring a whole new jargon and when it all settles, the new pyramid will leave us all looking up with that familiar desire to climb.

So when that moment comes, please consider the title of this blog … our future ability to get it right depends on it, thanks.

In case of all that funny wig stuff, please note that neither my employers, their funders or authority bodies take me too seriously, but do have policies that look good in a scuffle. If it does come down to a bit of 'hey boys hey' then please be advised my lawyer starts every sentence with "Now I ain't no legal expert but ...", and I'm not as hard as I look. These are my words, I choose to speak freely, I'm on the side of the non-agressive, creative young people of Planet Earth.
