Soldiers Rule OK

What has got Darren all stirred up about the Army presence at the recent Music Industry Day?

It’s Music Industry Day: community music projects and banner stands, a flow of networking freelancers, the buzz of young people in varying shades of rock and indie, and amongst the professional bodies who’ve made the effort, the Army …

What? You mean the regular army, soldiers and stuff, how to load a rifle, drive a flippin’ great big tank, join the professionals and all that?

Yes but not quite. It appears that being a musician in the Army is a recognised career, a valuable and accessible opportunity to develop your youthful creative talents and be a member of an elite force, travel the world, get paid top whack and wear a smart uniform.

But surely not? The creative mind and regimented training for the call to bloodshed, never the twain shall meet. Well, putting it that way, I don’t suppose they do.

However it leaves me restless for other reasons, even three years after first meeting and greeting the impeccably smart, prompt, confident, well-spoken, decent-mannered gentleman, who came that day to smart-deliver to the YP’s of small-town this concept of marching to the beat of armed forces; other reasons that can be wrapped up in one, rather disappointing statement:

He was the only person that day who truly left me feeling impressed.

Anyone care to tell me why?
