Musical Eyes Network

Musical Eyes is a new, Youth Music funded network being launched in September by 20,000 Voices for early years practitioners and music leaders.

This is a network for early years practitioners and music leaders. The focus is the exchange of knowledge and skills between these two groups of professionals with an emphasis on music-making and approaches to music-making in the early years.

The reason for calling the network 'Musical Eyes' is that it is as much about opening our eyes and ears to how competent small children are in music-making as it is about our own professional development.

There is so much to be gained from music leaders and early years professionals swapping their skills. All too often, the music leader is seen as the 'expert', and early years practitioners defer to their judgement when they arrive in an early years setting. The early years practitioner is the expert when it comes to child development and the children they look after day-to-day. The music leader is the expert regarding music, so let's exchange these skills in a genuine, open and honest dialogue.

The network areas are North Tyneside and Northumberland, but we will be offering opportunities to those in the wider region and beyond wherever possible.

The interactive website will be central to this resource, so please get involved in the conversation.

I am jointly managing and developing this network with Anne Suggate of 20,000 Voices and will be taking responsibility for keeping our website up-to-date, engaging and interactive.

This network is in its very early stages of development and will launch in September 2012 and run for one year to September 2013. We hope to continue it beyond this period.

This work is funded by Youth Music.
