Vocal Babies

One of our Vocal Babies Tutors describes her experience of delivering our bespoke Vocal Babies Package to Children's Centres across Kent and the impact it's had on her practise...

Growing in Confidence

I’m the sort of person who likes routine, is very comfortable in the role I have had for the past 11 years (which I’ve been lucky enough in the most part to mold to my skills) and doesn’t take to change too quickly so, when asked if I would like to train as a Vocal Babies tutor, I was excited to say yes, but also incredibly nervous and apprehensive!

This year I have partnered with an experienced tutor to deliver our Vocal Babies workshops in various venues across Kent, including Thanet, Deal, Dymchurch and Lydd.  For someone who gets nervous in new situations, this has been a roller coaster of a ride for me!  Some of the venues and areas are not places I’m familiar with and, as each centre we work in is completely different than the last and each set of families we work with are different, each course has provided new challenges for me to overcome.

Having said that, it has also been an amazing experience and has definitely raised my confidence levels, not only in the workshops themselves and my own ability but also in my personal life outside of work.

I recently had to take the first session of a new course in a local centre as my colleague was ill and couldn’t make it.  This course had been particularly over-subscribed and we were at full capacity with 14 babies, each accompanied by their relevant family member/carer.

The idea of doing this session on my own was completely terrifying and there was no way I would have even entertained the idea a year ago.  But, as the year has progressed, I’ve gone from feeling like the 2nd tutor who always needed and seeked approval to feeling like an equal tutor, able to offer the same level of quality in the workshops as my colleague.

I was given the opportunity of postponing the session but decided to go ahead as planned anyway.

The workshop went incredibly well, despite my voice being croaky from so much talking and singing!  The icing on the cake for me was when I heard that one of the mums had written on facebook what a good session it had been – the best testimony you can get!

I’ll be completely honest – given the choice, I’d rather not do another session on my own … but at least I know now I can do it and do it well.  Everyone at that session went away with something new, as did I.
