You are here:

I think Joe Jackson said it best......

Is it just me?

I can stand for an eternity staring into the fridge but unless it's there, with B.U.T.T.E.R written in large font, right at the front with nothing else anywhere near..I can't see it.

Sometimes I tell myself.."you can do this...don't ask for help..it's in here somewhere.."

Then over my shoulder appears my wife's arm... into the fridge, moves the ketchup to one side and.. voila!.. Kerry Gold!.. (other spreads are available)

I'm told that men are hunters, so if we can't find our prey, we instinctively freeze motionless and wait for it to wander into our field of vision.  Women are gatherers, so they move things around and look behind them. I'm not sure if this is true but I do know that this is one of the many things that my wife does consistently better than me.

One thing that we males do better is..sitting in front of a computer screen with headphones on moving blocks of midi information around.

In my experience, boys love doing that..girls don't.

In some of my classes the ratio of boys to girls is 10:1 ,often higher, and it's been that way since I can remember.

It's only recently that I've thought about it and have started developing strategies to make modern music making more appealing to girls

I'm currently working with Warrington Youth Service to develop a music project for a girls group at Orford Youth Base.

We want them to experience music technology but in a way that is appropriate for them and not necessarily  in the same way that the boys do it.

I think... girls prefer a more social environment in which to experience technology.

I think.... friends, microphones, dance-moves, PA systems, Ableton Live and launchpad controlers might be a way forward.

I think... Joe Jackson said it best...

I'd love to hear from anyone who has done anything similar.
