Building on an earlier Sing Up Beyond the Mainstream partnership with Durham Access Service, this SU NCB project strengthened the Durham delivery and expanded into Newcastle where it worked both with primary aged looked after children as well as early years. A Family Learning model evolved.

Singing sessions in Durham

Weekly singing sessions over nearly 3 terms with looked after children and foster carers + fortnightly workforce development in form of a choir + contribution to annual transition week (transition to secondary school).

Weekly singing sessions over nearly 3 terms with looked after children and foster carers + fortnightly workforce development in form of a choir + contribution to annual transition week (transition to secondary school).

Early Years Singing with children and foster carers.

Embedding and sustainability activities

  • in Durham and Newcastle,ongoing sessions for both 5-11 and 11-16 age groups.
  • a Foundation Learning Programme for LAC aged 16-18 who are classed as NEET with participants recruited from across the North East, held at The Sage Gateshead. Music at its heart but also addresses basic literacy and numeracy issues as well as citizenship. The course is a rolling programme for 20 hours a week running for an average of 15 weeks.
