Earlier this year we were excited to award Wired4Music member Jacob Roberts-Mensah a place on our Generate programme, with a bursary and mentoring support to run his own music project.

Reflections on what went well, things we learnt, and things to develop

If any proof was needed of the high standard of music making achieved by local young people, then Cre8’s Youth Concert was all the evidence needed. 

Furthering Talent is Awards for Young Musicians’ (AYM) programme working with young people from low-income families who have been identified as having emerging talent. These students access instrumental tuition and musical progression support to help them achieve their potential and develop into musical adults. 

The Open School Orchestra (OSO) programme has been well-thought-out, having been developed by OpenUp Music over many years. There are aspects to this which mean it has sustainability and ongoing development built in from the start. Having worked on some inclusion projects where lots of good work happens, but it fizzles out in the setting after the end of the project, it's worth noting and learning from how the OSO format increases the chances for sustainability.

A group of young cancer survivors have released a touching music video as a ‘virtual choir’. The 23 singers, all of whom have been affected by cancer, all sang pop superstar Sia’s The Greatest at various times throughout the year. The performance release launches the charity’s new month-long #Nofilter4cancer campaign, which aims to raise awareness of the hidden emotional and mental costs of cancer for young patients.

This post is about Northamptonshire Music Education Hub’s "Inclusive Ensemble" initiative - part of our Fund B “Music Forge” programme – developed in partnership with Friar's Academy (SEN/D school, secondary level) in Wellingborough. It describes how our relationship with the school and the young people has developed over time, and draws some conclusions about what’s made the project work so successfully for all involved over the longer term.
