About

Charlie Fletcher is an experienced musician, teacher and arts professional who has taught in both formal and informal education settings. Before moving into the arts he had a successful career in business and IT. He has worked with 1000's of young people and adults across Hampshire on a range of music activities and in 2008 completed a Post Graduate course in World Music Studies; spending time in The Gambia conducting fieldwork in local schools and with renowned Kora maker Alieu Suso. Charlie co-founded the UVG in 2008 with the aim of providing an opportunity for young people who had an interest in singing to come together outside of school and share their passion. 15 years on the UVG has become a key provider of non-formal music tuition in the Portsmouth area. In 2013 Charlie was invited to Buckingham Palace in recognition of his work with the charity and in 2018 the UVG celebrated its 10th anniversary with a sellout concert at Portsmouth Guildhall featuring over 100 singers. In the same year, Charlie was a co-recipient of a Civic Award from Portsmouth City Council on behalf of the UVG. In 2021 The UVG charity merged with The Guildhall Trust marking a new chapter in its history.
