New Research on Early Years Music Provision and Deafness

Music4U in the Humber region and York is pleased to announce the publication of a report which tackles an important, but under-researched area of provision: music for young deaf children.

Funded through Youth Music’s Musical Inclusion programme, this new Music4U report is the second output of a wider research project focused on the theme of early years music and deafness. It follows on from a national conference – ‘Music to Young Ears’: Engaging Deaf Children with Music – which was held at the National Centre for Early Music in York on 8 May 2013 during Deaf Awareness Week. For more about the conference, including a film which features interviews with some of the speakers, please visit our website.

Like the conference, the purpose of the report is to share the learning from Music4U’s research with wider audiences and stimulate debate and discussion. It provides a thorough review of the issues relating to the provision of music opportunities to deaf children up to the age of five. It also offers some recommendations for how Music4U can work in partnership to build on the research and learning.

Music4U encourages you to read the report, which is available for downloading here and ask you to share the research with others who may be interested. We also invite you to share with us additional examples of best practice or ideas for how we can take this work forward.

Music4U is a music partnership between the National Centre for Early Music and the local authorities for the East Riding of Yorkshire, Hull, North East Lincolnshire, North Lincolnshire and York. Funded by Youth Music, Music4U is part of their Musical Inclusion (MINC) programme, which helps children and young people in challenging circumstances to access and progress through high quality music making.
