The Dodgy Carpet Carnival International Youth Collaboration, Glasgow 2018

What an amazing experience The Encontro Street Band Festival 2018 in Glasgow was.

4 years ago we had a little idea and a lot of passion for introducing young people and teenagers to this amazing world of music and dance, fast forward to August 2018, we took 9 amazing youngsters from Jubacana to the Encontro Street Band Festival to collaborate with other youth bands from around the UK and The World.

The video had now been released documenting the experience which you can view in this article or click here to see it: https://youtu.be/z69EX79EEME

Since Spring 2018 we have been collaborating remotely with SambaYaBamba Youth Street Band (Glasgow), Pulse of the Place (Edinburgh), Jack Drum Arts (Durham) and our friends from São Paulo, Brazil, Banda Alana. Videos were bounced back and forth across continents to create an incredible youth collaboration: The Dodgy Carpet Carnival! They got together over 2 days in Glasgow to create something truly stunning and perform it over 3 days across the festival, including being on the huge stage in George Square in front of thousands of people, it was an experience we’ll never forget.

Holly (Jubacana director) and Dan (project manager of Jubacana) visited Banda Alana in 2013 in São Paulo, they were a huge inspiration to starting Jubacana and it was incredible to have them here in the UK.

We invited Banda Alanda to Oldham for a very special summer school before they flew back to Brazil so they got to meet the rest of Jubacana. We will post another article and video of this special experience.

Being part of a global community working with young people and showing what they can achieve through the arts is our passion, and every single young person involved over the weekend should be so proud of what they have achieved.

The future of this movement is in safe hands.

A huge thank you to our funders and supporters Youth Music/Arts Council England, Oldham Youth Council Kerrching Fund, Oldham Council Arts Development Team, Juba do Leão, Global Grooves - Manchester and Future Leaders, we are so lucky to be supported by amazing funders and organisations to allow young people to have these experiences.
