Music is a powerful tool for young people in alternative education

Througout 2018 Boom Box has been working with young people from a Pupil Referal Unit in Manchester. The unique music opporuntities GMYN and Memody CIC provide through the programme have proven to incredibly benefical to the students.

Jacky, a staff member from the Pupil Referal Unit says “GMYN have been providing our young people with weekly music sessions. The young people really enjoy having an outlet in music, their confidence and self esteem have grown, which has had a positive effect on the rest of their lives. One of our young people said, “it’s made me feel confident and passionate”. The GMYN team have been welcoming, supportive and inspirational. They are skilled at nurturing young peoples talent”

The staff working on Boom Box have all seen first hand the powerful impact music is having on the young peoples lives. Nick, Programme Co-ordinator at GMYN says "Boom Box has been so important to the young people at the PRU, before the summer holidays we regualry met with 4 young people and it was the highlight of their week. They started to really engage in their school work, just to make sure they had the opportunity to come along to the session. In the session, you could see their confidence grow and the music they worked on was a real outlet for the stresses they faced."

The programme has just started working with another group of young people from the same education provider, watch this space for more updates.

‘Boom Box’ provides care experienced young people with the chance to create their own songs and music videos whilst gaining confidence with other young people from similar backgrounds. The programme is funded by Youth Music.
