Online music-making.. any guidelines for young people collaborating globally!!!

Does anyone know of guidelines / safeguarding advice for young people who are collaborating creating / making their own music online - which can include working with young people / projects / platforms from all over the world? How can we advise them about safeguarding, creative copyright, exploitation, etc?

Not sure if you've seen this before - but the UK Council for Child Internet Safety (UKCCIS) has published some research/guidance in the area. I've not had time to read it all, and suspect it might not be detailed enough, but at least a starting point to the discussion - https://www.gov.uk/government/groups/uk-council-for-child-internet-safet...

What are others doing in this area? Would be great to have some more practical experiences shared! Maybe we can draw together some guidance that builds on this as a starting point and expands to cover IP?

Thanks Nick - I've seen this - although like you not read it all. Quite rightly there is an emphasis on child protection in all guidance I've seen. The context for my question was hearing about a parent who is proud that their 14 year old is collaborating in song writing with a "global" contact which is then being "published on the internet". It would be good to draw up some guidance on "making music online" or "creative collaboration online" for young people - possibly the Youth Music Network can ask the UKCCIS to advise? Maybe the people behind this platform could also advise http://songwriteronline.co.uk/

To echo you Nick - does anyone have any experience in this area?

Hi Ruth, our staff team and Music Leaders have raised this issue a number of times over the years. We have hosted panel events with NPO Small Green Shoots and representatives from PRS for young artists in the past. Whilst they did provide some practical advice around safeguarding themselves as artists, the content was complex and there were many grey areas. I totally agree that a guidance resource for music making organisations, music leaders and young people would be hugely beneficial.

I would give Natalie from Small Green Shoots a shout to see whether she has come across/ or written anything that may be of use. I'd be interested to hear if you do manage to unearth anything thing!
