Pupils make relaxing music for Mental Health Awareness Week

Three pupils from Clayton Village Primary school in Bradford have produced a relaxation track to coincide with Mental Health Awareness Week and their SAT Exams. The pupils have been working on the Moving Up education transition project funded by Youth Music, which aims to use music as a tool to share their opinions and feelings from moving up from Primary to Secondary school.

The class have been producing lots of different styles of music but three pupils decided that Relaxation music was the best for them as Anne Marie explains

“We have SATS which can be stressful for some pupils so we wanted to make a track that would help us relax”

"I really wanted to make a chilled track to help be less stressed for my SATS and really enjoyed writing the calming lyrics and we hope everyone enjoys listening to it" - Alisha

The theme for Mental Health Awareness week is Stress and primary school children across the district are sitting their SATS this week so the group called TEAM Chill wanted to make a track to relax to.

Ross Elliott who has been helping the group produce and record the track explains.

“The group created some inspiring and calming lyrics then used a series of instruments to create a relaxing piece of music with an important message.”

Assistant Head Heidi Rahim says Working with Ross writing their own lyrics as inspired our children.

"They have been able to choose their own style for their own purpose. On this occassion with SATs coming up the children chose to relax. This has been a great way to help them feel relaxed in the run up to SATs."

Miss Clifton, Year 6 class teacher, believes that the project as a whole has really benefitted the children. "It has given the children the chance to discuss their feelings towards transition to secondary school and capture these feelings in song. Music has been a really positive way of the children exploring and expressing themselves. We are really looking forward to sharing our songs in the upcoming weeks."
