About The Music Works and why we need this role
The Music Works (TMW) is a Gloucestershire charity that transforms young lives through music. We’re specialists in working with young people in challenging circumstances to help them reach their full potential in music, in learning and in life. We work with over 3,000 young people a year in schools and our four community studios in Gloucester, and the Forest of Dean. Our approach is youth-led, with young people involved at every stage of planning and delivery.

In September 2021 we opened a new inclusive music hub for young people in Gloucester. Take a virtual tour of the space here. The Hub is becoming known as a national beacon for inclusive best practise in music. It has resulted in a huge increase in demand for our work and has led to a doubling of our staff team with new opportunities arising all of the time.
The main purpose of this role is to oversee studio sessions in The Hub, taking on recording studio engineering and production sessions with young musicians and clients we work with, ensuring high quality recordings and professionalism throughout. This role will report to the Studio Hub Manager.

- Operate recording sessions for young local artists, musicians, and bands
- Ensure smooth technical running of the studios
- Provide technical assistance for all studio users
- Support the studio hub manager with procedures and risk assessments related to the use of any equipment within the inventory
- Support the studio hub manager to maintain hub equipment, carrying out regular inventory checks, undertaking repairs in-house whenever possible, or sending equipment off site for repair as required, and ensuring the published inventory is up-to-date at any given time and arranging supplementary hires as necessary
- Support with the issuing and returning of studio equipment
- Help install, operate, or troubleshoot studio equipment or software
- Adhere to safeguarding protocols
- Undertake training where necessary to complete job tasks
- Be a keyholder for the building, reliant upon opening or locking up the facilities when needed
- Support staff in one-off events, such as events, concerts, or festivals that the organisation engages with
- Promote the studios and music activities (with our marketing team) to local musicians
- Maintain records of feedback & evaluation from young people through our data capture system
- Be committed to putting young people at the heart of everything we do.
- Promote and comply with all of our policies and practices
- Be responsible for identifying and undertaking training and personal development
- Undertake any other reasonable duties, commensurate with the level of the post so as to ensure the smooth running of the studios
This is a senior role within our organisation and while we are really committed to developing our staff, we need you to come ready to hit the ground running. We’re flexible in terms of your career background and are not interested in qualifications but what we do need is someone who can show that they have the experience and track record around the following. You should be:
- A proficient user in DAWs, specifically Logic or Pro Tools
- Have a detailed technical knowledge of analogue and digital audio recording studio workflows
- Have at least 3 years experience of engineering recording sessions in a studio environment
- Have relevant credits on a broad range of music releases across a wide range of genres
- A really, dynamic person, has lots of energy, is good at making decision, and can juggle lots of things at any one time
- A flexible person who can work evenings as well as weekends
- Prioritise time management to meet demands
Ideally we’d also love it if you:
- Have some experience with music performance or live sound
- Have previous experience working with young people
- Have experience and knowledge of DAWs such as Ableton Live, or FL Studio
- Have experience using Dante or other AoIP technologies
- Have knowledge and experience of one or more professional creative software solutions such as Final Cut Pro, Adobe Creative Suite, or OBS
- Have experience with customer service, meeting client needs, or similar
Details of the role
This is a full-time role (37.5 hours per week), subject to normal probation period of 6 months. It is a permanent role but we will consider job shares, and flexible working with the right candidate.
The salary is £25k. There is a requirement for regular evening and weekend work.
The role will be based at our Gloucester studio but some travel to other venues across the county may also be expected.
