I Speak Music

About

A new project called ‘I Speak Music’ has been launched by Surrey Music Hub to bring together professionals and community groups who work with, or have an interest in supporting newly arrived and vulnerable young people (for example young asylum seekers, young refugees, young people who have been trafficked to UK) through the arts and music. Surrey Music Hub was awarded a Youth Music grant to work specifically with young people who have recently arrived in the county from areas of conflict and diverse cultural backgrounds. Using the medium of music the project aims to develop musical, English language and other life skills as well as providing a safe and creative space to make new friends and settle into their new life.

“As a British woman of Iranian descent it is an honour to be able to help young people of a similar cultural background to myself through this amazing project. I commend Surrey Music Hub for its ground breaking efforts to create projects that reflect local diversity and cater to the individual needs of the county's young people." Sara K– Surrey Music Tutor

The taster sessions took place in the first half of 2018. Some at a local six form college and some at the Electric Theatre in Guildford. By the end of 2018 about 52 hours of music making and song writing, mostly at the county six form College, will have taken place leading up to a professionally led studio recording session in December at the Academy of Contemporary Music in Guildford.
