What are the most important music elements for beginner instrumental players?

Is it notes, durations, intervals, reading from the stave? We want to collect as many responses as we can from all of you music teachers to produce a progression programme to get every player through those first couple of gruelling years. All your responses will be much appreciated. Thanks!
