Sound Engineering Course

We’re now taking applications for young women to take part in a four-day intensive sound engineering course and live performance with Speth Hughes at the Museum of Science and Industry. Part of our Here Come the Grrrls season of women in music, the group course will offer just five places to women aged 16-25.

About Speth Hughes

Speth Hughes jumped on a tour bus at the age of 16, refused to get off it, and 26 years later is still sound engineering for bands, artists, events and the occasional TV show.  She’s mixed bands in pubs, clubs, theatres, arenas, stadiums, festivals and everything in between and can be mostly found in fields during the summer months getting wet at festivals. She owns a large collection of waterproofs, wellies and umbrellas. Speth has worked with an incredible number of artists as diverse as Duke Durmont, Jason Donovan, The Earlies, Tinchy Stryder, Misha B and Hot Chip and she’s currently working with Rick Astley, Baaba Maal and Nero. She’s also worked on TV programmes such as Dragons Den, Blue Peter and a number of news and sports channels.

About the course

This is a fantastic opportunity to explore the fascinating field of sound engineering, discovering what makes live music sound great! Over four-days, participants will learn all about microphone techniques, mixing desks, and speakers. The group will develop new skills, including how to set up a sound system from start to finish, do a sound check, and communicate with the artist to get the best possible sound for their performance.

The course will take place from 18 – 22 July at the Museum of Science and Industry, working with Speth to mix sound for the talented musicians taking part in Brighter Sound’s artistic residency with Anna Meredith. Following the four-day course, participants will be given the opportunity to mix sound during a live performance at the museum’s Science in The City Late on Wednesday 27 July.

Application information

All females aged 16-25 are invited to apply – musical experience is not required.

No previous experience is necessary, just a curiosity for how all the wires, boxes and microphones get strung together and turned into a live sound mix.

Dates: Mon 18 – Thurs 21 Jul 2016, 10am-3pm

Performance: Weds 27 Jul (Day rehearsal and evening performance, times TBC)

Applicants must attend all sessions at the Museum of Science and Industry in Manchester.

Applicants must be female and aged 16-25.
