Sexology Songwriting project
Young people from around the UK have begun work on a Sexology Songwriting project that will see them exploring the study of sex through music and lyrics. This will incorporate various topics and issues, including gender, sexuality and how sex is represented in pop lyrics. In Brighton the project is led by Rhythmix in collaboration with the University of Sussex, Safety Net, Brighton Dome and Brighton Youth Centre. The Sexology Songwriting project forms part of an eclectic national season linking events taking place inside and outside of Wellcome Collection’s London exhibition. Ester Mcgeeney (academic researcher for this project) has shared her views and experiences in various blogs about the project - check them out!
The Sexology Songwriting project has the following main aims:
- To support the young people to understand current sex research
- To develop song-writing and performance skills and an understanding of sex in popular music
- To produce and perform in local venues and at a showcase event in London.
This project benefits from the inputs and contributions from the project team; academic researchers (Lucy Robinson, Prof Rachel Thomson and Ester Mcgeeney), Rhythmix Music Leaders (Marina Perryman and Zoe Konez) and Youth Worker Jo Bates from Safety Net.
At a recent session it was announced to the group that they are going to have a chance to perform at the Roundhouse on 17th February 2015 and to record a track that might be included in the Wellcome’s Institute of Sexology exhibition by 29th January 2015.
In general it is a fun experience and we encourage others to come and see what it’s all about. Hopefully this brief blog has captured your interest in this project and we encourage you to follow.
