Thank you 2013, here's to the next one!

Well I cannot believe it's 2014 already! Well I cannot believe it's 2014 already!

When I was a kid I used to dream about the year 2000, and try and work out how old I would be then! I never really thought as far ahead as 2014, but one thing I did do, and continue to do now, is to make sure I approach each year believing for it to be even better than the one before. Better in terms of the experiences I will enjoy, the people I will meet, the things I will learn from them, the music yet to be created, the growth in all my relationships, my faith, my character as a person and so on and so forth!! This may all seem a bit much to be thinking about now, but it causes me to think of the young people I support through music....

What are they hoping for this year? Do some perhaps struggle with the concept of 'hope'?

Is it enough for them to simply get through each day?

What role can I play, and what role can music play in helping to enrich their lives?

I am blessed, I am priviliged, I am very fortunate with the things I have, the people I love, my friends, my family, I have much to be grateful for.

Surely I must ask myself, doesn't that therefore make me far more able to bring something positive to others....

Perhaps simply putting a smile on someone's face through singing a song, or placing a piece of music. Maybe by helping a young person learn an instrument, and discovering they have gifts and abilities they never realised where there. Could I help them write a song, as perhaps a way of expressing the journey their lives have taken them on?

The art of music, singing, songwriting, playing an instrument etc.... can work wonders in building confidence, bringing joy, finding hope where there may be despair, peace where there is strife, light where there darkness, a laugh and smile where these things are absent.....

This all may sound a bit deep...but music is deep...and those of us who are musicians have a wonderful gift, a humbling privilege, and yet also a great opportunity to enrich the lives of others through this wonderful gift of music..

Perhaps we could all approach this New Year with a determination to lift others through this beautiful art form.....
