Getting the best.... from Early Years practitioners

Yorkshire Youth & Music is writing a series of guides called 'Getting the Best'. The guides are for teachers, teaching assistants and other members of staff on how to make the most of a visiting musician during a project running with children and young people in a variety of settings. Our first guide concentrates on working with Early Years practitioners.

Based on our extensive experience of running projects with Early Years children, in both formal and informal settings, Yorkshire Youth & Music has written a clear and concise document to guide staff in getting the best outcome for children involved in the project, and making the most of the expertise of their visiting musician.

"Yorkshire Youth & Music employs highly skilled, trained and experienced musicians on its projects working with children and young people. Their skills vary; some have expertise in music technology, some in singing, some are folk musicians, some classical and some work in various styles. What they have in common is extensive skills, knowledge and understanding of how music ‘works’." Getting the Best... guides

Our latest project with Early Years children with SEND ran in Bradford in partnership with the local Council and a number of local children's centres.

After observing our musicians in these settings and with the information from our evaluations from a variety of previous projects with Early Years children, we decided we should put together some simple pointers for staff in our partner settings, in order for everyone to receive the best benefit possible from the experience of YYM practitioners: the children, their parents and the staff themselves.
