First Access Percussion Unit 1 Training Course

Thursday 4 September - St Peter & St Paul C of E Infant School, Rock Lane, Chaddon, Caterham, CR3 5BN

Monday 22 September - Hawkedale Infants, Stratton Road, Sunbury-on-Thames, TW16 6PG

Both sessions run 4.15pm to 5.45pm.

This training will introduce teachers to the First Access Percussion scheme and train you on how to deliver the first 15 steps of the scheme of work (including on-line resources)to your class.

WHO FOR - KS1 teachers who who are new to teaching the First Access Percussion scheme to their class.

COST - FREE of charge.

The course provides training on understanding the benefits of singing in health care settings. It offers practical training on setting up and leading singing activities in health care settings, with a particular focus on people with dementia and their carers. This course is delivered by tutors from the Sidney De Haan Research Centre for Arts & Health, University of Canterbury in Partnership with Surrey Arts and the Surrey Health & Social Care Joint Training Partnership.

WHO FOR - This five-day course is aimed at health and social care professionals, volunteers and carers who are interested in developing singing activities in health care settings. Community singers and/or musicians who are keen to develop their work in health care settings would also find it beneficial. There are no pre-requisites to attending the course. Participants don't need any previous musical/singing experience or don't need to be able to read music.

PRICE - FREE but advanced booking essential. We're delighted to be able to offer course delegates a free place at the Singing, Wellbeing and Health Symposium at the Royal College of Music, London on Wednesday 10 September, 2014, 10:00 - 16:00.

Basic techniques you can use for different purposes and how to break down a song to teach it. This will also serve as an opportunity for participants to teach the group a song and receive feedback.

All sessions are from 6pm - 8pm. Registration and refreshments from 5.30pm.

This short course of six sessions offers an introduction to the myriad of choirs and singing group models and purposes. It covers how to set up and sustain your own singing group exploring repertoire, teaching and conducting songs. It will look at leadership styles and how to support your singing groups in a supportive and confident way. The course will be led by community musician Liv McLennan. Liv was recently involved in the successful Arts Partnership Surrey 'Singing Surrey' project and has led choirs in Leatherhead and Runnymede. She has led numerous training courses for Surrey Arts including presenting at the 2013 Surrey Music Hub conference.

WHO FOR - Recommended for those who are interested in setting up an informal singing group or those who need additional support with an existing group. For example music teachers, staff leading or setting up workplace choirs, community volunteers leading, supporting or thinking of setting up a singing group, existing choir leaders seeking new ideas or inspiration. No previous experience needed and no need to read music.

The Winning Formula for Your School Show Choir!

Wednesday 12 November, 4.30pm – 6.00pm (registration and refreshments from 4pm)

This session covers how to support your school Show Choir and will be led by vocal coach and music leader Roz McLeod. Roz will provide an introduction and definition of Show Choirs. She will explore the benefits of having a school Show Choir and how to run the choir to get the best from each member. She will discuss repertoire ideas, vocal and performance approaches and the addition of choreography. She will talk about the Surrey School Show Choir competition and provide some hot tips to ensure your school gives the best performance it can!

WHO FOR - Primary or Secondary Teachers who are interested in setting up a Show Choir in their school or teachers who would like to develop an existing Show Choir.

Getting Boys Into Singing

Thursday 20 November 2014, 4.30pm – 6.00pm (registration and refreshments from 4pm)

Walsh Memorial C of E Infant School, Ash Street, Ash, Surrey, GU12 6LT

In this workshop you will learn the basics of beatboxing through easy steps. How to become a beatbox choir and a human drum kit and how to create vocal movie soundtracks and soundscapes through easy and fun games. Physical groove exercises and a series of loop games that will transform any group into a human loop station. Followed by games on an actual physical loop station and an introduction into Bobby McFerrin's technique of group improvisation called 'Circle Singing'.

This session will be led by Tobias Hug, former bass, beatboxer and Artistic Director of The Swingle Singers. Tobias co-founded the world's first beatbox choir together with Shlomo and is highly-regarded for his commitment to education.

WHO FOR – Recommended for teachers and those working with boys/male voices. No previous music experience require, just a willingness to try new things.
