Music4U - Jumping into 2019!

We’ve had a jam-packed start to 2019 and a new Learning and Participation Manager, Lottie, join the NCEM team at the end of last year, to continue the amazing work that has been coordinated by Emily Crossland over the years, thank you Emily.

We thought it would be nice to reflect upon some of the Youth Music funded Music4U projects that have taken place this year and to look forward to those that are coming up in due course.

I Can Play! relaunches in York

I Can Play! is a project that helps deaf children and those with a hearing impairment, to access music making opportunities and this January, York relaunched its programme in collaboration with Lollipop, Music and the Deaf, York Music Forum, York Music Hub and York Deaf and Hearing Support. It was a fabulous day led by Music and the Deaf CEO Danny Lane and colleague Sean Chandler, providing activities for a range of ages. Regular sessions are now continuing as part of the York Music Forum’s line up of ensembles with different focuses for each session, firstly looking at brass and most recently keyboard playing. Check out our video here!

East Riding Music Hub CPD with Danny Lane

I Can Play! Is also a continuing success over in the East Riding and most recently the East Riding Music Hub hosted a CPD session with Danny Lane, exploring best practice when working in music with children and young people who have a hearing impairment.

Let’s Rock at Bridlington Spa

We also went along to a wonderful performance of Let’s Rock led by Remarkable arts, who run this fabulous Music4U project, bringing together nearly 100 talented young musicians and their groups across the East Riding and Hull, to perform at the Bridlington Spa. It was a brilliant evening with performances from Remarkable Rock, Freedom Road Creative Arts, Castaway Sloop Group and School of Rock. Their performances were full of energy and we can’t wait to see how these groups develop over the next few years!

Hull Creative Voice festival

Creative Voice Youth Arts Festival is an arts development initiative, in partnership with Hull Youth Development Service, Headstart, Hull Music Hub and Hull Young People's Parliament. Some of these activities here were part of Hull’s Music4U programme, including: the amazing Beats Bus workshop, where young people get to be hands on with music and graffiti art, there was planning for the next performance as part of the COOLture conversations programme and an opportunity for young people to discuss what a Youth Arts Festival should look like.

Looking forward to…

Youth Music Give a Gig week in April

Of course there are many projects bubbling away across all three regions and we’re excited to see how they progress but a recent development we are really excited about is an event now confirmed for the Freedom Road Creative Arts group who will be performing as part of the Youth Music Give a Gig week on April 12th at the new Astor Hostel in York! This is a brilliant platform for them to showcase their talent again, this time in the centre of York. Some of our acts are featured in our photos below.

This is Music4U…

We are very much looking forward to bringing more musical opportunities to children and young people across York, Hull and the East Riding and recently summarised our Music4U work in the short clip embeded at the top of this post – enjoy!
