Crossing Cultures session 3

Developing Music

Week 3 was a lot like week 2, however this time we looked more in depth at our musical influences and heritage. We talked about our parents and grandparents and what they listened to. This was a real eye opener to Lee and I as this exercise really demonstrated the wide variety of musical cultures we had in one room. We had everything from Flute concertos to Bob Marley. One of the girls from Czech Republic told us about some of the instruments from her country. They were instruments I'd never heard of but all were really interesting. I am researching them for next week. After that I then got to teach the drums to someone and she took to it like a duck to water. She learnt very quickly how to play a simple 4/4 beat so slowly but surely through the session it got slightly more complex. I also helped develop the bass playing some more. Meanwhile Lee was going more in depth about writing lyrics and talked about the senses. What do you feel? What do you hear? Etc. This proved to be a very good exercise and in the end we had some really nice songs and discovered a very good singer.

We're moving really well with the project. More to come next week!
