My Music, My Manchester — Call Out

Be part of a large-scale music project this October half term. Collaborate with Meklit, an internationally renowned musician and cultural activist. Create new music during a week-long residency and perform alongside professional musicians at the BBC Philharmonic Studio. Give a voice to your city.

MyHub are looking for talented musicians aged 13 – 18 from across Manchester to be a part of a week-long creative residency and performance from 25-30 October at Band on the Wall and the BBC Philharmonic Studio, MediaCityUK.

This is a unique opportunity to collaborate with Ethio-American singer, songwriter and cultural activist Meklit to create new music that explores Manchester’s diverse musical cultures. Experiment, explore, push your creative limits and give a voice to your city.

A TED Senior Fellow, Meklit co-founded the internationally renowned Nile Project, bringing together artists from eleven countries to overcome politics and conflict through musical collaboration. In April 2016, she was commissioned by Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts to compose the song cycle, There Is No Sound Barrier, and she is currently completing a commission from the prestigious MAP Fund for the composition of her Ethio-Jazz inspired work, This Was Made Here. She has toured extensively across the US, UK and East Africa.

At the end of the week, you’ll be joined by members of the BBC Philharmonic orchestra and Manchester Camerata to rehearse and perform a new ‘song-cycle’ at the BBC Philharmonic Studio in a large-scale concert that integrates music with digital projections and a documentary film.

The performance will take place on Sunday 30 October, 3pm at the BBC Philharmonic Studio and is a free, drop-in public event.
