UVG Le Tour!

Singers from The Urban Vocal Group take part in cultural exchange trip to France.

To celebrate the 35th Anniversary of the twinning of the city of Portsmouth with Caen, 16 young UVG singers joined 18 others from the Kings Youth Theatre and Victory Land Theatre as representatives of young people’s arts organisations in the city.

The first exchange trip took place in April when 15 young people from Caen’s Papillon Noir theatre visited Portsmouth where they participated in drama and vocal workshops as well as visiting some of the cities famous historical sites. This visit was reciprocated in July when the young people from Portsmouth travelled to Caen to participate in a day of workshops hosted by Papillon Noir. The highlight of the trip for UVG singers was performing 3 songs at a local arts festival in front of an audience of over 300.  The trip was a fantastic opportunity for young people to experience other cultures and for multiple organisations to work together. UVG Singer Georgina (17) said “I loved going to Caen and seeing how they act, sing etc. as it’s not something you see every day, it was very interesting to see how they teach too” The friendships made on the trip last a lifetime and has only made our young people hungry to do more work like this in the future. UVG singer Beth (13) said “It felt amazing when we finished performing and I genuinely wanted to do it all over again. This was an incredible opportunity for us and an experience we will  never forget.
