ECCO spotlighting report by Musiko Musika

Musiko Musika has just published a new report which investigates the Ethnic Contemporary Classical Orchestra (ECCO) model.

Written by External Evaluator Mark Troop with evidence and case studies from Musiko Musika the report was produced by the ECCO Spotlighting project which aimed to gather evidence, reflect and share the effective practice evident in the distinctive ECCO approach to learning music in a culturally diverse instrumental ensemble (as has been developed by Musiko Musika in its work with the ECCO at Kensal Rise and Stoneydown Park primary schools).

The development of the Ethnic Contemporary Classical Orchestra (ECCO) has its roots in Musiko Musika’s work in the field of progression and development opportunities for ensemble playing in the context of cultural diversity and an inclusive social agenda. The objective of the ECCO model is to create inclusive and culturally diverse music ensembles, breaking down barriers to participation in high quality ensemble playing for ethnic minorities, and providing children with talent and potential musical progression as they move beyond primary into secondary school. The long-term aim is to break down the barriers that currently prevent children from diverse social and ethnic minority backgrounds from participating in the highest level of music activities in this country.

The underlying objective of the ECCO is to develop the spiritual, intellectual, emotional and social being of each of the participants in order for them to realise their own potential as human beings.

In particular, the report on the project aims to identify and disseminate the successful aspects of this work that can be replicated by other organisations and ensembles wishing to develop a culturally and socially inclusive provision. During 2013 we are undertaking a programme of conference presentations on the report and CPD focussed on the implementation of the approach. We welcome suggestions or enquiries about these opportunities.
