Bright Sparks Final Concert, July 2012

Earlier this month, participants in our Bright Sparks project performed their original composition ‘The Olympic Break’ at Brentwood’s Gone Global – part of the Sparks Will Fly celebration of the Cultural Olympiad in Essex. For a final project update, we spoke to Andrew, one of our Bright Sparks Mentors, who has also been receiving music leader training from the RPO resound team.

“There has been a lot of hard work put in from all the Bright Sparks over the past few months so there was a lot of excitement and anticipation in the group on performance day. After a morning sound check and a nervous wait however, we got on stage to perform our pieces.

Many of the musical ideas in our performance were improvised, giving me an important role as one of the Mentors. It was our responsibility to lead the sections and make sure they played together well. It taught many players to watch their leader and the conductor, as well as learning the music off by heart!

It was great to hear all the other players motivated and enthusiastic and the performance brought all the effort from the workshops together, giving the Mentors and Apprentices a chance to see what all their training had been for. With all of the skills being put together it created a seamless performance which all the members of the audience enjoyed, including our special guest Boreas Zephyr. Everyone thoroughly deserved the applause they were awarded with! It has been great fun to work with such talented young people over the past few months.”

We’d also like to thank all the project participants for their hard work over the past few months. They gave a great performance and we’ve thoroughly enjoyed working them.
