'Leap' forward - new advance in motion technology for musicians

Noise Solution has been investigating working with motion sensors and interesting technology for a while. A year ago something caught our eye called the Leap motion sensor..we pre ordered it and it just arrived..... It was well worth the wait.

Here are two videos, one introducing the sensor itself and the other introducing a piece of software called Aeromidi that holds exciting possibilities in interacting with the controller.

Some of you may well have been following Noise Solution's blogging over the last year or so about using kinect sensors as a way of creating music. The idea being to find ways of breaking down the traditional barriers to making music presented by the usual interfaces - keyboards or fretboards.

We had some success with the Kinect system. It looked great you could have a lot of fun with it..it certainly made a few people's jaws hit the floor as you waved your arm and triggered anything from a dubstep bass to a violin's glissando.

It did however have some drawbacks, chiefly it's complexity in set up and maintenance. We are looking for kit that others can use realistically and the kinect didn't really tick the boxes in that department. So a great demonstration tool with a heap of potential but not fully realised. About a year ago we came across the Leap motion sensor and it looked like it might possibly perform a lot better than the Kinect so we pre-ordered one..It finally arrived this week and we've been playing with it. We think it's so cool we should introduce it to you.

Check out the video about the sensor then check out the video underneath for the Aeromidi software - sometimes I have to pinch myself that I get paid to do this kind of thing...so much fun. Let me know what you think.

We have also been hugely impressed with the Aeromidi software we downloaded designed to work with it. This is a really cool piece of software that is well thought out to make music creation with the leap motion relatively painless and a hell of a lot of fun - check it out.
