Sonic Youths gig at the Hub

As well as the regular SoundBites and Homesounds sessions, we have had lots of special events throughout the Spring term.

We’ve had gigs at the City Academy hub, with young performers from Norwich City College - Level 3 music students and from Lucy Grupp a singer/guitarist and JBXM who is an electronic artist Sonic Youths.  It was a great opportunity for the SoundBites young people to be able to ask the performers questions about where they find their inspiration and how they overcome their performance nerves. The Soundbites young people were inspired and enjoyed the gig experience, with some saying they would be more likely to go to a gig offsite as a result.

As well as this, the SoundBites project tutors went on tour, taking our music making sessions to young people who attend the MAP YIF project. Again, a great response to the session, singing, percussion playing and piano playing – by the end of the session around 20 young people were all singing and playing instruments together in one big live karaoke session!

HomeSounds has continued exploring the world of location recording and live streaming, and we have been working with students at City of Norwich School (CNS) alongside our original City Academy students. During the Easter holidays, we took the participants to Sheringham Park in North Norfolk, where we have a HomeSounds solar powered live streaming mic – thanks to the hard work and dedication of Homesounds tutor Martin Scaiff and Rob Coleman - Learning and Community Engagement Officer for the National Trust. The microphone broadcasts the sounds of the park online through the LocusSonus Sound Map site, which broadcasts the sounds from live microphones all over the globe. The young people had the opportunity to see and understand all the equipment and consider all the variables involved in setting up and running it, as well as a an enjoyable 4 mile walk recording sounds of the park and coast as they went.

Soon we will blog about a the fantastic stuff that has been going on during Summer term….it’s been a busy and exciting time!
