About

I am a freelance music education researcher and I am very interested in the interface between formal and non-formal education.  I have worked extensively with arts organisations to embed itterative evaluation processes and to research outcomes and professional development.  I have also carried out research on the impact of music for vulnerable young people. As a researcher, I have worked on projects funded by many National organistions including BECTA, QCA, TDA, Youth Music, Sing Up, Paul Hamlyn Foundation and English Folk Dance and Song Society and also designed the pedagogic content for a pan-European project on e-learning,  More locally, i have worked extensively with Rhythmix and SoundCity. I have also carried out research on transition in and through music between primary and secondary school. I am the lead consultant for music education on two overseas projects for Cambridge International Exams, involved in curriculum writing and professioal development for teachers. I am also an associate researcher at the University of Cambridge, currently working on action research in schools on Kazakhstan.  I am a qualified and experienced instrumental and classroom teacher and for the last 9 years I have been involved in secondary music and generalist primary teacher training, most recently at the University of Sussex.  Since 2009 I have worked as a freelance researcher  with the Incorporated Society of Musicians (ISM) on some of their music education work to support their lobbying and advocacy work.

I am a member of the steering group of SoundCity, the Brighton and Hove Music education hub.
