We got the Beat

We got the Beat (WgtB) builds on the success and learning of Helix Arts (HA) Off the Beat 2016-18, a digital music co-production with Cramlington Voluntary Youth Project (CVYP). CVYP works with a diverse range of young people facing challenging circumstances.

WgtB worked with sector specialist organisations such as Inclusion North, education provider, Cramlington Learning Village and an associate musicians pool to offer a diverse array of music opportunities to young people and young adults, including those with disabilities and/or autism at CVYP. WgtB has built on inclusive music activity with young people’s groups at CVYP.

During a workshop programme with professional artists, young people in Cramlington created an ambitious music, the kind they wanted to make and listen to. WgtB also provided supported skills development and progression in Arts Award. Young musicians with a range of complex needs developed skills and confidence experimenting with new music co-production and shared their work with others.

Young people are at the heart of programme and were supported in decision-making to identify, shape and build their programme so it responded to their needs and abilities.

They worked alongside talented artists in a variety of music and related art-forms chosen by them. Digital music production was celebrated and shared with YM funded organisations regionally and nationally.

The programme culminated in a rural residiential music making weekend as well as a showcase celebration and award event. This co-curated, inclusive programme aimed to inspire others and showcase talents.
