Early Years Incubate 14/15/ July 2023
Event description
Early Years Incubate is a very special one-off professional development opportunity to work with Helena Rodrigues of Companhia de Música Teatral , Portugal.
Helena is a founder of Companhia de Música Teatral, a group that has music at the root of interdisciplinary practice and that has been internationally acclaimed for their unique “artistic and educational constellations”.
She has been leading an innovative approach to training based on immersive experiences and on what she defines as “opening the gates on communicative musicality”. Physical theatre, somatic education and free play are at the core of this approach.
Helena accomplished her PhD under the guidance of Edwin Gordon. Colwyn Trevarthen has been another strong influence on her work. She is the founder of the Laboratory for Music and Communication in Infancy at NOVA University.
Helena will be joined by Jorge Graça, currently a Musical Sciences PhD student at NOVA FCSH. His research is focused on Community Music. He’s a saxophonist and composer and currently focuses on solo electronic music projects and technology-mediated performance. He has been collaborating with Companhia de Música Teatral on a number of their artistic and educational projects.
This is an unique opportunity to work with Companhia de Música Teatral in the UK.
Over the two days we will explore listening, silence, voice, movement. Searching for togetherness and authenticity, we will awaken "organic musicianship" to connect with ourselves and embrace an awareness of "intuitive caring". Caring is the intention; music expression will be the flow.
Listening is tuning.
Tuning is caring.
We will work on body awareness and movement, aiming to expand our listening skills. Vocal explorations aiming to awaken “communicative musicality” and to heighten self-expression in soundscapes and “vocal scapes”.
The environment will be stimulating, caring and nurturing.
Helena will also offer time for observation and discussion of video excerpts on the topic of art for early childhood and share insights into Edwin Gordon's Music Learning Theory for infants and toddlers.
Each day will run from 10am till 4pm in Stage Two, Norwich . We invite participants to arrive 30 mins beforehand and have allowed for a later departure time of 5pm to allow for space at the edges for hanging out. Lunch will be provided, and we can signpost to accommodation for those coming from further afield.
