Establishing York's first youth gamelan ensemble

A throwback to the days of making music together in person! We wanted to share this little insight into what we have been building in York over the last 18-months of our Youth Music funded Sound of Bronze programme.

It has been a very productive time, filled with taster sessions, residencies in local schools and community venues, performance opportunities, networking and training with other gamelan and inclusion professionals, and the growth of a regular young people's ensemble for the first time EVER in York! We are very grateful to Youth Music, and to our supporters at York Music Hub, East Riding of Yorkshire Council, and friends and alumni of the University of York.

This short film shows our weekly youth group that meets up at the University of York on Thursday evenings and is open to anyone under 18 (recommended for 7-14s). Unfortunately, like everyone, we're taking a break from our usual meetings but we are working on some online activities for anyone interested in learning more about gamelan and being creative from the comfort of their own homes! If you, or anyone you know, might be interested in finding out more about what we offer, please do get in touch with us, either here or by dropping Emily, our Gamelan Director, a line on emily.crossland@york.ac.uk.

Stay safe and creative, everyone!
