Future Bubblers is a grass roots talent discovery and mentoring scheme from Gilles Peterson (DJ, producer, BBC 6Music broadcaster, label owner) and Brownswood music. Make Music: Need Money is their jargon free, real-life panel giving insight into all the potential startup income streams for a young British musician. Presented by Future Bubblers, featuring insight from music sellers, public funding supporters and emerging talent.
Make Music: Need Money has been set up to address one key issue that continues to confuse and faze young music makers. After a path of hard graft, pulling in favours etc., how do they make the move towards income streams that can take their music and creativity to the next level? Although it’s not the be-all-and-end-all of being an innovative music creative, there comes a point where money is important; getting your project of the ground to that “professional” step and additionally creating a career that is valid and sustainable.
This panel calls on industry experts from the fields of crowd-funding, public funding representatives from the Arts Council England, independent record label start-ups, and emerging musical talent who have experiences of the obstacles and opportunities concerning finances for young musicians.
Through our Sing City programme, we share the Future Bubblers’ vision to deliver tools, knowledge and self-confidence to enable young people to progress with their musical ambitions, on their own terms and with integrity. We hope this panel will dispel common place music industry myths and outdated thought process and encourage “outside the box” thinking to fit with the music innovation.

This Future Bubblers ‘Make Music: Need Money’ panel is presented as part of Sing City, Brighter Sound’s songwriting and vocal collective for young musicians.
Our free Sing City sessions continue to build, develop and nourish the talent of young people by incorporating regular performance opportunities, guest masterclasses and special workshops into our programme. Sessions are led by a team of professional musicians including Liam Frost, Sara Lowes and James Holt, as well as a number of guest musicians. Past guests have included psych-pop quintet Blossoms, British indie stars Field Music, award-winning folk fusion quintet Project Jam Sandwich, critically acclaimed singer-songwriter Josephine and The Futurehead’s frontman Barry Hyde.
At the end of every month, there is a Sing City Live night giving young musicians the opportunity to perform live on stage at one of Manchester’s best live music venues, Band on the Wall.
Open to under 13-25’s. Free, but booking is required as places are limited.
